Garmin is a best GPS system for road navigation.

I would suggestion a Garmin nuvi 265WT or Garmin nuvi 765T that have a Text-to-Speech (get turn-by-turn spoken directions with the real names of streets), Wide screen.

Garmin nuvi 265W/265WT 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic

Generally everyone wants a GPS that is cheap in price, but high on quality and value.
It is refreshing to hear that you just want a nice GPS from a reputable company.
Therefore I would like to recommend the GPS that i have been using and stand by.
Sure you can always go with the tomtom's garmins or whatever, but if that were the case then why would you ask in yahoo answers. It seems that you have seen these models in action and are a bit shaky about them.
So I would send you in the direction of many of the newelectronx gps units for sale on the market. They have superb quality and customer service. Matched with a great warranty and top of the line technology in the marketplace (oops you don't care about the technology or newest this and that - just thought i would mention it. - grin), I would look into one of their units. They offer several different models too with the most IMPORTANT THING THAT YOU MENTIONED HERE - LOW LOW LOW LOW PRICE....!!!

Hope this helps.

There are so many options out there that it would be hard to give you a direct answer. Your best bet is to check out http://www.the-portable-gps.com and click on the category you are interested in. ie Auto gps, gps tracker etc. They have comparison charts on all the models and you can select the one that has all the features you want and the lowest price. Keep in mind the prices they show are the MSRP and you can always get on cheaper than that. Good luck

I'm a big fan of Garmin products. The Nuvi 205W or 255W should do everything you need to get around.

You can tap Menu/ Detour. But that's not very effective if you are looking for an all together different route from the set go.
The best way to accomplish this is by tapping Settings/ Navigation. There, you can change Route Preferences from Faster time= more freeways or faster roads even if it means more distance/ Shorter distance= The most direct route, even if it means using slow streets/ Less fuel/ Off road. The route will change depending on your selection.
Another thing you can change to modify your route is Avoidances. If it's enabled, you can direct your GPS to avoid U-Turns/ Freeways/ Toll Roads/ Traffic (only applies if you have that option)/ Ferries

Hope it helps

The transmitter will allow you to hear the directions from your car stereo by using an FM channel. It's actually a nice feature, because it's less install and wires. Unless the first, cheaper one has a good internal speaker.

I believe one of the main purposes of the FM transmitter is to allow the Garmin Nuvi 660 to broadcast to your FM radio instead of using its built in speaker. This is presuming that your FM radio sound will be louder and clearer. You have to decide if that is worth an extra $100.
